Another round of baby formula recalls linked to a dangerous germ has once again raised questions about the safety of the formula supply chain. Perrigo’s March 2023 recall of Gerber Good Start SoothePro Powdered Infant Formula represented the fourth major recall of baby formula since February 2022 due to potential contamination of Cronobacter sakazakii.
If your infant has been diagnosed with a Cronobacter infection or another serious bacterial infection such as Salmonella after consuming recalled baby formula, you may have claim against the manufacturer. What Is Cronobacter Sakazakii?
Cronobacter Sakazakii is a bacteria commonly found in the environment that most commonly gets into the food supply by contaminating dry goods. Cronobacter infections are typically harmless for much of the population. However, newborns and infants with weak immune systems are at risk of severe illness if they’re exposed to the bacteria. Sadly, there have been at least two documented infant deaths due to Cronobacter infection since the Abbott formula recall in 2022 and more documented illnesses.

Summary of Baby Formula Recalls
- February 2022 – Abbott Nutrition recalled its Similac, Alimentum, and Elecare baby formulas due to potential Cronobacter Sakazakii contamination. The recall was announced after FDA inspectors found unsanitary conditions at Abbott’s manufacturing facility in Sturgis, Michigan, including on surfaces that came into contact with the formula. The recall was expanded in March 2022 and threw US formula supply chains into limbo due to the amount of formula recalled. Many stores had empty formula shelves that left parents scrambling to find nutrition for their infants. The FDA reported that at least five bacterial infections among infants may have been linked to the Abbott recall, including two infants who died. Â
- December 2022 – ByHeart recalled 30,000 cans of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula over concerns of Cronobacter Sakazakii contamination. The ByHeart baby formula recall covered five lots of the product and was initiated after Cronobacter was detected in a third-party facility that handles the formula. No illnesses have been reported from the recalled ByHeart formula. Â
- February 2023 – Reckitt recalled two batches of its Enfamil Prosobee Plant Based Infant Formula due to potential Cronobacter contamination. The recalled Enfamil batches covered 145,000 cans of the product. The company said it had identified Cronobacter in material provided by a third party supplier and promptly recalled the potentially affected formula. The recall announcement said that Reckitt is no longer working with that supplier. No illnesses have been linked to the Enfamil formula recall.
- March 2023 – Perrigo announced the recall of all lots of its Gerber Good Start SoothePro Powdered Infant Formula manufactured at its facility in Eau Claire, Wisconsin between January 2 and January 18, 2023. The recall was due to potential Cronobacter Sakazakii contamination. Perrigo confirmed that none of the recalled product tested positive for Cronobacter and said the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution. No illnesses have been linked to the Gerber formula recall.
