Recreational vehicles (RV) are an increasingly popular tool for people who like to travel the country. There has been a huge increase in RV ownership and travel since the COVID-19 pandemic, with many people looking for new ways to travel without the price or cramped spaces of traditional travel. Some people even live out of their RV!

Most RVs are safe when used properly. However, even the safest products can fail and there is always danger when operating a large, heavy product like an RV. Some RVs, commonly known as motorhomes, operate as vehicles and some must be pulled behind a vehicle using a trailer. Regardless of the type of RV, there are some RV and RV-specific accessories that are dangerous to use even if the operator follows the manufacturer’s instructions.

If you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin and you’ve suffered an injury involving a recreational vehicle, you need a lawyer who can handle complex product liability cases. The RV Injury Lawyers at Goldenberg Lauricella have over 38 years of experience litigating complex injury cases. Please contact Goldenberg Lauricella, PLLC today for a free consultation.

RV Trailer Injuries - Blue Ox SwayPro

The RV injury attorneys at Goldenberg Lauricella are currently investigating cases where an individual was injured using the Blue Ox SwayPro trailer hitch system. The Blue Ox SwayPro can cause serious facial and head injuries when its rotating latch wrench is used to unhook the product from your vehicle.

The Blue Ox SwayPro connects your pull behind RV trailer to your vehicle. Its specific purpose is to reduce the sway of your trailer when driving. The issue with the Blue Ox SwayPro arises when a user unhooks the product’s spring bars from the trailer. The spring bars connect to chains, which then connect to rotating latches on the trailer.

The spring bars hold the weight of the trailer and are under significant tension. To disconnect the spring bars, the chain must be disconnected from the rotating latch using a large, heavy wrench. Once the chains begin to loosen and the rotating latch goes over center, the wrench can violently swing in the opposite direction. If a user is not prepared for this shift in force, the wrench can strike with the force of the trailer.

Complicating this process is the fact that the user must also pull a locking pin on the rotating latch to begin loosening the chains with the wrench. The locking pin keeps the rotating latches from unhooking from the chains while the trailer is in use. In order to unhook the locking pin, the user must place their head close to the rotating latch while using the wrench to release the chains from the rotating latch. There have been multiple reports of facial fractures and serious head injuries caused by the wrench violently swinging toward the user during this process.
